Tour de Montfollet: inscription by order of 19 May 1937

Origin and history

The Montfollet de Laval tower is a medieval monument located in the commune of Laval-en-Belledonne, in Isère (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built in the 14th century, it represents a typical example of defensive architecture of this period, although its precise history remains little detailed in the available sources. Its inscription as Historic Monument by order of 19 May 1937 bears witness to its heritage importance, and it is now owned by the commune.

The location of the tower, reported as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), is indicated by an approximate address: 679 Route de Montfallet, Laval. Although the sources mention GPS coordinates and a reference in the Merimée database, no additional details are provided on its current use (visit, rental, accommodation). The tower remains a symbol of local heritage, linked to the feudal history of the region.

In the 14th century, the Alpine region, then integrated into the Dauphiné, was marked by a feudal social organization where watchtowers or defence towers played a key role in the protection of territories and populations. These buildings often served as shelters or surveillance posts, reflecting the political and military tensions of the time. The Montfollet tower is part of this, although its specific history and possible owners or builders are not documented in available sources.
