Tower of the Belfry: ranking by decree of 17 November 1921
Origin and history
The Tower of the Beffroi of Bourbon-Lancy is an architectural vestige located in the municipality of the same name, Saône-et-Loire. This monument, now isolated, was once a key element of the city's walls. Its style and function recall medieval urban defensive systems, although its exact construction period is not specified in the available sources.
Ranked as historical monuments by ministerial decree of 17 November 1921, the tower illustrates the heritage importance of the Burgundy fortifications. It is now owned by the commune of Bourbon-Lancy, which ensures its preservation. Its current location at 2 Rue de l'Horloge allows us to envisage its integration into the historical urban fabric, although the details of its past use remain partially documented.
The medieval belfries, such as Bourbon-Lancy, served as both a watchtower, a symbol of communal power and a visual landmark for the inhabitants. In a region marked by exchanges between Burgundy and Auvergne, these structures played a central role in the social organization and defence of the cities. Their preservation offers concrete testimony to the urban dynamics of past centuries.
