Origin and history
The Arquet Tower, located in Cambrai, is a water gate built into the fortified city compound in the 16th century. It controlled the entrance of the Scheldt, playing a key role in defence by regulating the river's course to create defensive floods. With the nearby Caudron tower, it formed an advanced defensive ensemble, including a barbacan and the remains of a lady to slow down the attackers.
Inside, the tower houses a vaulted vaulted hall, adorned with a monumental fireplace and sculptures on the lamp-ends. Although its construction dates back to the end of the 14th century, its defensive design and classification as a Historic Monument in 1942 underline its architectural and strategic importance. It illustrates medieval military techniques adapted to river control.
The Arquet Tower symbolizes the ingenuity of northern urban fortifications, combining hydraulic and military functions. Its state of conservation and its architectural details make it a rare testimony to the defensive systems linked to streams, typical of the border towns of the time.
