Origin and history

The belfry of Rouen, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, replaces an earlier building destroyed after the revolt of the Harelle in 1382. The Rouennais, forbidden to rebuild a belfry, bypassed the order by erecting a clock tower in 1398. Its architecture combines radiant and flamboyant Gothic elements, with a frame arrow later replaced by a classic dome. Since 1389, the monument houses the Gros Horloge mechanism, one of the oldest astronomical clocks in France, as well as bells symbolizing civil authority in front of churches.

The clock, installed between 1527 and 1529 on a Renaissance arch replacing the Massacre door, features dials decorated with a golden sun and a lamb indicating the time. A complex system displays the lunar phases, the days of the week via astrological allegories (Diane for the moon, Mars in armor, Venus, etc.), and an animated seeder. Restored several times (1889-1893, 1997-2006), the clock has operated with electricity since the 1920s, although its mechanical mechanism remains operational. Closed in 2023 for restoration, the site reopens in March 2024.

The richly carved Renaissance arch bears the arms of Rouen (a paschal lamb on a red background) and original polychrome motifs, like a Christ in Good Shepherd. The upper half-timbered floors illustrate the influence of Renaissance style in the city. Nearby, an 18th century fountain, classified in 1889, represents the love of Alpheus and Arethuse, symbolizing the Seine and local sources. A shop dating from the 16th century, an old watchmaker's lodge (called governor until 1970), is now used as an entrance to the museum.

The Gros Horloge Museum allows you to discover the workshop of the watchmaker, the bells, the weight of the mechanism, and offers a panoramic view of Rouen and its cathedral. With 30,000 annual visitors, the site embodies both an exceptional technical heritage and a symbol of historical tensions between municipal and religious power. Two postal stamps (1976, 2014) and artistic representations, as in Le Livre des Fontaines (1526), testify to its cultural importance.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1862 for Gros Horloge and in 1930 for belfry, the whole has undergone recent degradations (tags in 2023, vrillette attacks) requiring urgent restorations. The works planned in 2025 are designed to preserve its wooden and stone structures, while scaffolding was installed in 2023 to secure the facades. The monument remains a unique example of a medieval astronomical clock still in operation.
