Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-du-Val tower is a medieval structure located in the lower town of Provins, in Seine-et-Marne (Île-de-France). It marks the location of the former collegiate Notre-Dame-du-Val, now extinct, and stands at the crossroads of Notre-Dame and Old Notre-Dame streets. This isolated monument bears witness to the religious architecture of the past, although its precise historical context remains partially documented.
The tower is the only remaining element of the collegiate Notre-Dame-du-Val, razed during the French Revolution. Its bells, transferred from the nearby Saint-Ayoul church, recall this historical link. Ranked a historical monument in 1905 for the tower itself, then in 1937 for the facades and roofs of the adjacent building, it illustrates the partial preservation of Provins' religious heritage. The property is now shared between the municipality and a private owner.
Available sources, such as the descriptions of Amédée Aufauvre and Charles Fichot (1858), highlight its archaeological and historical importance. The tower, although lacking its original collegiate structure, remains a visual and cultural landmark in the urban landscape of Provins. Its classification and its central location make it a key element of the local heritage, supplemented by references in bases such as Mérimée or Les Clochers de France.
