Origin and history
The castle or tower of Venère, located south of the village of the same name in Haute-Saône, dates from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It served as a seat for one of the three local seigneuries. The building consists of a vaulted basement, a partially preserved first floor, and a later attic. Its architectural features include corbelled skunks, trilobed lintel berries, and terracotta paving, testimonies of its medieval origin.
In the 16th or 17th century, most of the vaults on the first floor were destroyed, and a spiral staircase replaced the old straight staircase built into the wall. The building, which was listed as a historical monument in 1998, retains, despite these changes, the structural elements of the period, such as its staircase tower and carved decorations. Today, it consists of more than 20 pieces and remains a remarkable example of Burgundy seigneurial architecture.
The precise location of the castle is indicated as being at 6 rue du Château in Venère (code INSEE 70542), in the department of Haute-Saône, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Although its present state reflects post-medieval transformations, its listing as historic monuments underscores its heritage importance. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its historical role as a symbol of local seigneurial power.
