Tour (Case AS 528) : entry by order of 1 December 1997

Origin and history

The Saint-Fiacre Tower, also known as the Sotte Tower, is a vestige of the fortified enclosure of Cambrai, built in the first half of the 15th century. It is part of a defensive system dating back to the 11th century, but modernized between the 14th and 18th centuries. From a semicircular plane slightly overturned, its sandstone base is now buried for several meters. It takes its name from a nearby 13th century cemetery, and stands close to modern public facilities such as the municipal swimming pool or Jules-Ferry College.

This tower marked one of the limits of the medieval city, integrated into a disbanded enclosure at the end of the 19th century. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, effective since 1 December 1997, protects this architectural testimony of Cambresian military history. The tower is now owned by the commune and is located boulevard de la Liberté, a few steps from the Saint-François school, formerly called the Saint-Fiacre school.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, underline its role in Cambrai's defensive network, as well as its precise location: between 6 Place Eugène Thomas and Boulevard de la Liberté. Although its state of conservation is not detailed, its record on the ASPEC site and its mention in the Mérimée base confirm its regional heritage importance. No information is available on its current accessibility or possible contemporary functions (visits, rentals).
