Sarrasine tower (ruins) (cad. AB 55): entry by order of 8 May 1973

Origin and history

The Sarrasine tower of Châteaudouble, located in the municipality of the same name, is a historical monument dated the eighth century. Classified as tower ruins, it illustrates the defensive constructions of the Carolingian or pre-Carolingian period in Provence. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 8 May 1973 underlines its heritage importance, although its present state is partial (cadastre AB 55).

The so-called Saracen towers in Provence are often associated with the Muslim raids of the High Middle Ages, although their exact attribution remains debated by historians. The Châteaudouble, located at approximately 9050 Rue de l'Estrevan, reflects the need for monitoring and protection of local populations during an era of conflict and migration. Its location in the Var, near Toulon, makes it a witness to the region's territorial dynamics.

The monument, whose location is considered fair (note 5/10) according to available data, does not appear to be open to the visit in a systematic manner. The sources mention only its protected status and its integration into the Merimée database under Insee code 83038. No information is provided on any tourist or residential facilities ( guest rooms, etc.).
