Origin and history
The Tour d'Avignon is a historical monument located in the city of Avignon, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Classified as a Historic Monument, this tower has been listed as a protected monument since 1 February 1934. It is located precisely at 28 quay of the Line, although approximate GPS coordinates also place it near 58 boulevard de la Ligne.
These differences in location reflect a geographical accuracy that is considered to be poor (note 5/10), which may complicate its exact identification on the ground. The towers of this type, frequent in medieval or Renaissance cities, were often used for defensive, surveillance or storage purposes. In Avignon, a city marked by its pontifical history and its strategic role in river trade, such structures could also symbolize local or religious power.
Although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify the original use of this tower, its listing as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance. The region, rich in ancient buildings, bears witness to a continuous human occupation since ancient times, with periods of prosperity linked to the Rhône and Mediterranean exchanges.
