Origin and history

La Tour du Beffroi is a medieval building located in Chalon-sur-Saône, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 1st quarter of the 15th century, it rises to about 26 meters high and constitutes a notable architectural vestige of this period. Its exact location is 13 Rue des Tonneliers, in the city centre, and it is identified as part of the communal heritage.

Classified as historic monuments since September 12, 1923, the Tower of the Beffroi is protected for its heritage value. It belongs to the commune of Chalon-sur-Saône, which manages it. Although the sources mention its status as a historical monument, they do not specify its current use (visit, rental, etc.).

At the time of its construction, at the beginning of the 15th century, Chalon-sur-Saône was a dynamic city, marked by commercial and craft activities, particularly related to the Saône. The belfry, symbols of communal power, was often used to speed up urban life (warnings, gatherings) and to affirm the autonomy of cities against local lords. This type of monument also reflected the economic prosperity and collective organization of the bourgeois and artisans.
