Origin and history

The Grand-Cerf pass is a Parisian covered passage between Rue Dussoubs and Rue Saint-Denis in the 2nd arrondissement. It derives its name from the old sign of the Hotel du Grand Cerf, attested from the 18th century, which served as an outlet between Rue Saint-Denis and Rue des Deux-Portes. This place, originally envisaged to host the Opéra-Comique in 1782, was transformed in 1825 by the company Devaux-Moisson and Cie, then transferred to Isidore Monier, who already owned part of it. The works of this time, although poorly documented, marked its metamorphosis in covered commercial passage, prolonged to the east by the passage of Bourg-l-Abbé.

The current architecture, characterized by a high metal roof and interior bridges, would rather date back to the 1845s, when the passage was equipped with innovative structures allowing great brightness. In 1830, he housed the headquarters of the newspaper "Extra-Muros", frequented by the poet Émile Debraux. Bequeathed to public assistance in 1862 by the Monier heirs, its economic decline in the 19th century led to sales projects, finally concreted in 1987 after a major restoration. The Soviet architects of the Goum passage in Moscow inspired it, and it became a filming place, as for Zazie in the metro (1960) of Louis Malle.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1985, the passage of the Grand-Cerf is today a dynamic space combining artisans, creators and innovative businesses, some of which accept payments in bitcoin since 2016, worth the nickname "Bitcoin Boulevard". It also retains a memorial dimension, having sheltered artist Anne Français (1909–1995) and neighbouring the home of Léon Blum. Its rehabilitation in the 1980s, led by architects Jean Le Corre and then De Buhren-Audoin, preserved its picturesque character, between industrial heritage and modernity.
