Origin and history

The funeral chapel of the Lords of Baume, located in Suze-la-Rousse, Drôme, is a religious building built in the early sixteenth century. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1981, reflects the importance of local seigneurial families at that time. Its architecture and funerary function illustrate the religious and social practices of the Renaissance in Provence.

In the 1st quarter of the 16th century, the area of Suze-la-Rousse, then integrated into the Dauphiné, was marked by a feudal organization in which the local lords played a central role. Funeral chapels, like that of the Lords of the Balm, served both as a place of worship and as a symbol of power for noble families. They were often associated with prayers for the salvation of the souls of the deceased, in a context where the Catholic Church deeply structured daily life.

The monument, now owned by an association, is located at 5201 Grands Rue in Suze-la-Rousse. Although its GPS location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), its access and current use (visits, rental, etc.) are not specified in the available sources. The chapel, protected by decree in 1981, remains an architectural and historical testimony of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
