Origin and history
La Croix de Treuliec is a monumental cross located at Treuliec, in the commune of Bignan, Morbihan department. Dating from the seventeenth century, it was rebuilt in 1897. This monument is a medallion cross, with four carved leaves. On one side, it represents the crucifixion of Christ, while the other side shows a Pietà, that is, the Virgin holding the body of Christ after her descent from the cross. Its base is also carved, adding to its artistic and historical interest.
The Treuliec Cross was registered as historical monuments by order of 5 April 1935. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the local religious landscape. The cross is located along the departmental road 150, on land belonging to the commune of Bignan. Its location and design reflect the artistic and religious traditions of Brittany in the 17th century.
This type of monumental cross was often erected at or near the crossroads, serving as both a landmark and a symbol of faith for the inhabitants. The rebuilding of 1897 suggests a desire to preserve or restore this heritage, perhaps because of its state of degradation or its importance to the local community. Today, it remains a testimony of Breton Christian art and the religious history of the region.
