Origin and history

The Tribunal de la Chatellerie in Collonges-la-Rouge is a historic monument built in the 16th century. This building, characteristic of local architecture, served as the seat of the tribunal of the Châtelainie during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its red sandstone structure, rectangular plan and lauze-covered stair tower make it a remarkable example of Renaissance civil architecture in this region.

The house features carefully framed Renaissance-style windows and a semi-outbuilding staircase tower. These architectural elements reflect the importance of this place as an administrative and judicial centre for the seigneury of Collonges. Ranked Historic Monument in 1978 for its facades and roofs, it bears witness to the central role of seigneurial institutions in the social and legal organization of the period.

Located in the heart of the village of Collonges-la-Rouge, this monument also illustrates the use of local materials, such as red sandstone, which gives its name to the village. Its state of conservation and classification make it a major architectural heritage of the Corrèze, now integrated into the historical landscape of New Aquitaine.
