Roman Ways: inscription by decree of 5 August 1982
Origin and history
The sections of the Roman Ways of La Rothière are part of a set of Gallo-Roman roads linking Nasium (Naix) to Andemantunnum (Langres) on the Milan-Boulogne axis. These roads, essential for military and commercial exchanges, crossed several municipalities of the present Aube department, including La Rothière. Their route, partially preserved, bears witness to Roman engineering in Gaul.
Classified as historical monuments in 1982, these sections are part of a wider network including cities such as Brienne-la-Veille, Juvanzé and Saint-Christophe-Dodinicourt. Their preservation allows us to study ancient road infrastructures, often mentioned in sources such as the Table de Puisinger or the Route d'Antonin. These paths illustrated the romanization of conquered territories, facilitating the movement of legions and merchants.
The precise location at La Rothière (code Insee 10327) remains approximate, with an address referenced near the Allée des Tilleuls. Their listing as historic monuments underscores their heritage value, although their conservation status varies by section. These remains provide insight into the spatial and logistical organization of the Roman Gaul, between Lugdunum (Lyon) and the north-east borders.
