Roman Ways: inscription by decree of 5 August 1982
Origin and history
The sections of Roman roads of Precy-Saint-Martin are part of a set of Gallo-Roman roads linking Nasium (Naix) to Andemantunnum (Langres) on the Milan-Boulogne axis. These routes, built during the Roman period, served as strategic links for trade, military travel and communication between the main cities of Gaul.
These remains, still partially visible today, were classified as historical monuments by order of 5 August 1982. They are part of a wider network including other municipalities such as Brienne-la-Veille, Juvanzé and La Rothière, demonstrating the importance of these infrastructures in the Roman territorial organisation.
The site of Precy-Saint-Martin, located in the Aube (Great East region), illustrates Roman road engineering, with sections preserved despite centuries. These routes are mentioned in historical sources such as the Puisinger's Table or Antonin's Route, which mapped the Empire's roads. Their preservation allows us to study the construction techniques and urban planning of the period.
