Origin and history

La Poudrière Trouvaillant is a historic monument located in the Saint-James subdivision in Saint-Pierre, Martinique. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, this powder magazine is part of the military infrastructure of the French colonial era. It is completely classified, including its access ramp and the ground of its sitting ground, by an order of 3 August 2023. This classification also covers Parcel No. 317 of Section L of the communal cadastre, as shown on the plan annexed to the decree.

The powder magazine is now owned by the department of Martinique. Although its initial use is related to the storage of powder and ammunition, the information available does not specify its exact role in the local defensive system. The site is located with satisfactory accuracy (level 7 of 10), and its exact address is 5002 Lotissement Saint-James, 97250 Saint-Pierre.

At the time of its construction, Martinique, then French colony, was marked by an economy based on the cultivation of sugar cane and a highly hierarchical social organization. Military infrastructure such as this powder magazine played a key role in protecting the economic and strategic interests of the metropolis. These buildings also reflected the geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly in the face of the risks of revolts or conflicts with other colonial powers.
