Origin and history

The tumulus of the Cross La Beigne, also known as the Cross la Motte, is a protohistoric funerary monument located in the commune of Sainte-Savine, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. This archaeological site, typical of Protohistory, bears witness to ancient funeral practices in this region. It is now identifiable thanks to the cross that overcomes it, addition after its original construction.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of 29 October 1965, the tumulus was originally owned by the State under the administration of the Ministry of Culture. In 2008, an agreement signed on 8 January transferred its property to the commune of Sainte-Savine, marking a change in its management and preservation. This transfer reflects a local desire to value this unique archaeological heritage.

The tumulus is located precisely at the approximate address of 200 Avenue General Leclerc, although the GPS coordinates available offer an accuracy considered mediocre (level 5 of 10). The protected element, as defined by classification, corresponds to cadastral parcel C 660. This monument, though discreet, constitutes an important vestige to understand the ancient human occupations in the area of Troyes and Champagne-Ardenne.
