Tumulus of the camp of Gurs (Box C 271p): inscription by order of 20 November 1961

Origin and history

The tumulus of Camp Gurs is a protohistoric monument located in the commune of Dognen, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. This archaeological site, inscribed as a Historical Monument by decree of November 20, 1961, belongs to the category of tumulus, collective or individual burials characteristic of Protohistory. Its location, although documented (6 Route de la Soule, near Préchacq-Josbaig), remains approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5/10).

The Protohistory, the pivotal period between Prehistory and Antiquity, sees funeral structures such as this tumulus develop in Aquitaine, reflecting the social organization and the beliefs of local communities. These monuments were often used as territorial markers or as places of collective memory. The Gurs camp, although little documented in available sources, is part of this unknown regional heritage but essential to understanding pre-Roman cultural dynamics.

Administrative data indicate that the tumulus is protected as Historical Monuments under cadastral reference C 271p. No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, services) or on any artifacts discovered on site. The sources mentioned (Monumentum, Merimée base) also do not specify any archaeological excavations or associated results.
