Two menhirs (Box N 128, 130): ranking by list of 1889

Origin and history

The two menhirs of La Roche-en-Brenil, located in the department of Côte-d Their precise location, although documented in the Merimée database under the Insee 21525 code, remains approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5/10). These erect stones, identified under cadastral plots N 128 and 130, illustrate a prehistoric heritage whose chronological and contextual details are sorely lacking in available sources.

In the Burgundy region, both menhirs and those of La Roche-en-Brenil are usually part of a landscape marked by agro-pastoral activities from prehistoric times. These monuments, often linked to funeral, ritual or territorial practices, reflect the social and symbolic organization of neolithic communities. Their presence suggests an old occupation of the territory, although the current archives do not allow to specify their exact function or their connection to any neighbouring sites.

The lack of detailed archaeological data in the sources limits the understanding of their specific role in local life.
