Origin and history

The Beauport factory, established in Vedène in the 19th century, was authorized by royal ordinance in 1835 to produce garance powder, a highly prized red dye. Its development was allowed by its location on the edge of the Vaucluse Canal, which provided the necessary hydraulic energy. The peak of the site was reached around 1860, marked by the construction of a large oven building between 1866 and 1867, with remarkable cellular vaults. These facilities reflected the economic importance of the garance, then grown on a large scale in the region.

With the decline of garance at the end of the 19th century, caused by the competition of synthetic dyes, the site was converted into a sugar factory in 1890. In the 20th century, it will successively house an oxygen plant and a foundry, reflecting its adaptation to changing industrial needs. Today, Beauport is one of the last world remnants of the garancier industry, preserved for its iconic buildings such as the ovens or the hydraulic system linked to the Vaucluse Canal.

Classified and protected since 2011 and 2015, the factory retains unique architectural elements, including painted decorations by the Youth Buildings during the Second World War. These protections concern both industrial structures (turbine, boilers) and hydraulic devices, highlighting its historical role in the technical and social heritage of Provence. The site, private property, remains a symbol of 19th century industrial innovation and its material heritage.
