Origin and history
The Old Halle d'Abriès-Ristolas, located in the Hautes-Alpes, is a historical monument built in the 1st quarter of the 17th century. It bears the date 1609, as well as the arms of France and Dauphiné, engraved on stones in the shape of a coat of arms. However, it remains unclear whether the current building actually dates from that period or whether these elements were re-used later. These architectural and heraldic details suggest a strong link with the royal and regional authorities of the time, reflecting the administrative or symbolic importance of the hall in the local community.
Over the centuries, the hall has undergone major changes, especially during the post-war reconstruction, which altered its original appearance. Among the historical traces preserved are inscriptions painted in 1806 by the politician Richard Calve, restored in 1925. These additions reflect the continued use of the building as a public or political space. In the 1960s, a radical transformation into an initiative union profoundly distorted its historical character, partially erasing its original architectural heritage.
The hall is now owned by the commune of Abriès (code Insee 05001), in the Hautes-Alpes department. Its present state and precise use (visits, rentals, etc.) are not detailed in the available sources, but its history reflects the social and political developments of the region, from its initial role — probably commercial or judicial — to its modern adaptations. The inscriptions and symbols kept bear witness to the exchanges between central and alpine territories under the Old Regime.
