Origin and history

The building housing the present restaurant Chez Julien dates from the first quarter of the 19th century and brings together two historic shops in Paris then. Originally, the hostel The white pigeon occupied a part of the ground floor, marked by a cast iron grid of 1820, the only visible vestige of that time. This place illustrates the Haussmannian urbanization and the densification of artisanal and commercial activities in the Marais, a district then undergoing social and economic change.

Around 1900, the corner of Rue du Pont-Louis-Philippe was transformed into a bakery, decorated with a remarkable decoration signed by the Gilbert workshop. The panels under glass represent symbolic scenes (moulin, harvesters, wheat sheaves), typical of Art Nouveau aesthetics applied to Parisian signs. Inside, a painted ceiling imitating a bird-populated sky completes this composition, mixing utility and artistic. These elements, classified as Historic Monument in 1984, bear witness to the golden age of decorators specialized in mouth shops.

The front and interior decoration were protected by order of 23 May 1984, highlighting their heritage value. The site embodies the superimposition of the epochs: the 19th century industrial (melt-grill) and the 20th century artistic (Gilbert) while remaining a living place, today dedicated to restoration. The exact address, 62 rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and 2 rue des Barres, places the monument in the heart of a historical district, between Seine and medieval squares.
