Origin and history
The ancient Israelite cemetery of Phalsbourg, located in Moselle in the Greater East region, was created in 1796. Today it preserves nearly 400 tombstones, mainly dating from the 19th and first half of the 20th century. This place reflects the importance of the local Jewish community, present from the end of the seventeenth century, and its role in the region, notably through an influential rabbinate in the nineteenth century.
The cemetery was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 February 1996. It is managed by a cult association and remains an architectural and historical testimony of Jewish life in Lorraine. The steles, organized in rows, illustrate funeral practices and the evolution of the community over more than two centuries.
Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance. The site is located precisely at 2 Rue du Vieux Chemin in Phalsbourg, although the accuracy of this location is considered mediocre (level 5/10).
