Bridge on the Thouet: inscription by decree of 23 December 1926

Origin and history

The old bridge of Saint-Généroux, located in the commune of the same name in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a medieval work dated the twelfth century. This bridge, which crosses the Thouet, was entered in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 23 December 1926. It is an architectural testimony of this period, although details of its construction and any subsequent modifications are not specified in the available sources.

The location of the bridge, at 34 Rue du Vieux Pont, is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10) according to geographical data. Owned by the Deux-Sèvres department, this monument is representative of medieval infrastructures intended to facilitate exchanges and travel in a region marked, at that time, by a rural social organization and agricultural or craft activities. Bridges, such as Saint-Généroux, played a key role in the structuring of territories and the development of local trade routes.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, indicate that the bridge is still visible today, although its accessibility or current uses (visit, rental, etc.) are not detailed. A photo licensed by Creative Commons, attributed to Father Igor, illustrates this heritage, while its Insee code (79252) and its attachment to the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, confirm its territorial anchor.
