Origin and history
The fortified ensemble of the Villard, located in Chanac en Lozère, is a building whose origins date back to the 12th century. It consists of a wall of enclosure with a fortified door, delineating an esplanade where remains the remains of an older dungeon. A Romanesque church, dedicated to Saint-Privat since 1300, is integrated, with murals including a historical decoration from the 17th or 18th century in the cul-de-four. The adjacent buildings, such as the 15th or 16th century presbytery, complete this architectural complex.
The site was listed as historic monuments in 1988, including the ramparts, the church with its paintings, and all the buildings present. The enclosure wall, probably from the 14th century, and the hors-oeuvre stair tower of the presbytery illustrate the architectural evolutions of the site. The church's murals, added after its construction, bear witness to its religious and cultural importance.
Owned by the commune of Chanac, the fortified ensemble of Villard is a typical example of medieval fortifications adapted to the needs of local populations. These structures served both as a protection, a place of worship and an administrative centre, reflecting the social and religious organization of Occitanie throughout the centuries. The presence of a dungeon and a church within the same set underlines the dual role of these sites, both defensive and spiritual.
