Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Pierre de Lille, founded in the 11th century, was a major religious building in the city for nearly 750 years. Its construction began before 1066, as evidenced by a charter of endowment of Count Baudouin V of Flanders and his wife Adèle, who generously financed its foundation. This monument, originally in Romanesque style, became a central place for Marian devotion, including the miraculous statue of Notre-Dame de la Treille. The college was also the necropolis of the Counts of Flanders, including Baudouin V, buried in his choir in 1067.

In the 13th century, the college was transformed into a Gothic style, inspired by the Cathedral of Soissons, and became a cultural and educational home with its capitular school. It was damaged during the Austrian siege of 1792 and destroyed in 1794 after being sold as a national property. Only its Romanesque crypt, classified as a historical monument in 1971, remains today under the Palace of Justice, built at its site in the 19th century. Archaeological excavations of the 1960s and 1980s have led to the rediscovery of remains, including the tomb of Baudouin V.

The collegiate Saint-Pierre played a political and symbolic role, especially during the conquest of Lille by Louis XIV in 1667, who took the oath before Notre-Dame de la Treille to reassure the Lilles. His furniture, scattered after the Revolution, includes major works such as paintings by Charles de la Fosse and sculptures, now preserved at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille or in other churches in the region. The devotion to Our Lady of the Seven Pains, born in the 15th century under the impulse of Philip the Good, lasted until the destruction of the building.

The place of the college, in the heart of Old Lille, was reused for the current Palace of Justice, inaugurated in 1970. The latter incorporated the remains of the crypt, accessible to the public from the Rue du Palais de Justice. The two arches of the cloister, the last witness of the canon monastery, are still visible in a private garden in the Place du Concert, while the medieval cellar remains under a private hotel.

Among the outstanding missing elements are the tombs of the Counts of Flanders, such as that of Louis II of Male, decorated with 24 copper statuettes, now preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon. The statue of Notre-Dame de la Treille, symbol of Lille, was restored several times, notably by Philippe le Bon in the 15th century and Louis XIV in 1667. The college was also a place of power, home to the canon chapter and a renowned musical mastery.

The excavations of the 1960s, carried out during the construction of the Palace of Justice, revealed architectural elements such as Romanesque foundations and burials. These discoveries permitted the classification of the remains in 1971. Today, the crypt, accessible by a staircase, offers a rare testimony of medieval religious architecture in the north of France, while works of art from the collegiate church are exhibited in the Lille museums.
