Norbert de Xanten - Founder of the Order of the Premonstrates Received the site to found the abbey.

Origin and history

The remains of the church Saint-Norbert de Prémontré are located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. This historic site is closely linked to the foundation of the Order of the Premonstrated in the 12th century. According to the sources, the pre-monstrated toponym would be pratum monstratum ("pre-discovered, tried"), a place offered to Norbert de Xanten to establish his religious community. The legend reports that the location of the abbey was designated to Saint Norbert by divine intervention, thus giving his name to the order.

The commune of Prémontré, nestled in the forest massif of Saint-Gobain, retains a strong imprint of its medieval and religious past. The site, initially a pre-set, became the birthplace of the pre-show order, founded by Norbert de Xanten. The toponym evolved over the centuries, passing through forms such as Premonstratum (1120) or Premustré (1274), reflecting its spiritual and historical importance. Today, the vestiges of the church recall this time when the valley was a high place of monastic life.

The communal territory, marked by mainly forested land use (87.3% in 2018), has preserved traces of its history through ancient maps, such as Cassini's (18th century). Although the precise architectural details of the church are not described in the sources, its existence is inseparable from the foundation of the abbey by Saint Norbert. This religious heritage is part of a preserved natural landscape, between ponds and forests, typical of the region.

Administratively, Prémontré depends on the district of Laon and the community of communes Picardie des Châteaux. Its history is also linked to local dynamics, such as water management via the "Medium Oise" SAGE, which concerns the Oise watershed. The region's altered ocean climate, with cold winters and cool summers, may have influenced monastic and agricultural life around the Abbey in the Middle Ages.
