Ancient camp of Goult (vestiges of) (cad. E 176, 177, 186, 187 to 189): Order of 4 January 1963
Origin and history
The ancient camp of Goult is an archaeological site located in La Lande-de-Goult, in the department of Orne, Normandy. This monument, now in the state of remains, dates back to the periods of Antiquity and Protohistory. It is located in the south of the village of Goult, a former commune integrated with La Lande-de-Goult in 1821. The remains, although partially preserved, provide an overview of the defensive or habitat structures of these remote eras.
The site was recognized for its historical and archaeological importance, which led to its classification as historical monuments on 4 January 1963. This classification specifically covers the remains of the camp, identified in the cadastre under plots E 176, 177, 186, and 187 to 189. Owned by the municipality of La Lande-de-Goult, the site is referenced in the Mérimée base, an essential tool for the inventory of French architectural heritage.
Although the information available on its architecture or detailed history is limited, the ancient camp of Goult illustrates the ancient human occupation in this region of Lower Normandy. The current data do not allow the precise functions of the camp (defensive, religious, or other), but its existence attests to a structured social and territorial organization during these periods. The approximate location of the site, noted with poor accuracy (level 5/10), suggests that further studies could refine knowledge of this heritage.
