Origin and history

The viaduct on the Vecchio, commonly known as the Eiffel Bridge, is a steel railway built between 1891 and 1892 as part of the Ajaccio-Bastia line. Located on horseback in the municipalities of Venaco and Vivario in Haute-Corse, it crosses the river Vecchio at 84 meters above its bed. Its structure is made of beams and trusses, 170.96 meters long and consists of three spans of 44.5 meters, and rests on two masonry piles anchored in the river. The attribution of its design to Gustave Eiffel is explained by the involvement of his company, the Eiffel Workshops (1866-1893), although the direction of the works was entrusted to the entrepreneur Vignolle under the authority of the Minister of Public Works in 1890.

This viaduct doubles an earlier road bridge, built between 1826 and 1827, which itself replaced a former Genoese bridge destroyed during the Battle of Vivario in 1769. This conflict, between the French troops of Louis XV and the militias of Pascal Paoli, marked the end of the independent Corsican resistance before the French annexation. The Eiffel Bridge, classified as a Historic Monument in 1976 and then in 1992, symbolizes both the technical progress of the 19th century and the strategic stakes of opening up Central Corsica. Its integration into a landscape marked by the Monte Rotondo massif and the Vecchio valley makes it a major heritage element, both utilitarian and historical.

The Venaco region, located in the "territory of life" of the Corsican Centre, is characterized by a complex geology, between hercynian granites and lustre schists, and a rich history linked to the conflicts of independence and Roman occupation. In this context, the viaduct is a testimony to the modernisation of island infrastructures, facilitating exchanges between the two Corsican prefectures. Its metallic architecture contrasts with traditional stone bridges, reflecting the continental industrial influence on an island then undergoing economic and social change.

The Eiffel Bridge is also associated with the memory of the fighting for Corsican autonomy, notably the Battle of Vivario (1769), where the Paolist militia destroyed the former Genoese bridge to slow the French advance. This episode, often considered as decisive as the Battle of Ponte Novu, emphasized the strategic importance of this passage between Corte and the eastern plain. Today, the viaduct remains an essential crossing point for the Corsican railway train, while attracting attention for its technical elegance and its anchoring in island history.

Ranked among historic monuments, the Eiffel Bridge enjoys heritage protection that highlights its role in the history of Corsican transport. Its structure, although functional, is also a place of memory for the inhabitants of Venaco and Vivario, recalling the past struggles and the adaptation of the island to modern challenges. The surroundings, rich in natural sites (glacial lakes, forests, ZNIEFF) and archaeological remains (like Castellu), offer an exceptional setting for this monument, at the crossroads of engineering, history and Corsican landscape.
