Origin and history
La Vice-Gérence, located in Avignon in the Vaucluse department, is an architectural ensemble dating back to the 12th century. Its constructions spanned several periods, with significant additions in the 14th and 19th centuries. This monument has been classified as a historical monument since 1986, and includes ancient buildings located between the North Wing and the Popes' Palace, an emblematic place of the city.
The site is now owned by a private company. Although its current use is not clearly specified (visits, rooms or guest rooms), its heritage importance is underlined by its legal protection. Available sources, such as Monumentum, indicate a precise location at 10-12 rue de Mons, in a historic district of Avignon, marked by the papal presence in the Middle Ages.
The Vice-Gérence is part of an urban context where Avignon, the ancient city of the popes, retains many testimonies of its medieval and modern past. Protected buildings reflect the architectural and social evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. Their proximity to the Pope's Palace reinforces their historical and symbolic value in local collective memory.
