Origin and history

The Old Mill of Missé, located in Thouars, New Aquitaine, is a former fortified mill built around 1470. Commanded by Louis de Beaumont, lieutenant of Charles VII and close to Louis XI, he served as a lodging for the king during his hunting trips in 1472 and 1473. Its imposing architecture, with high dardian roofs and an armorial cross, evokes a castle more than a traditional mill.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the mill was partly ruined, but restoration work restored its original appearance. Despite its classification as a Historic Monument in 1929, it now houses a disco, mixing heritage and modernity. Its exact address, 59 rue du Pont-Neuf à Missé, is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 79329 (Deux-Sèvres).

The site is protected for its "remnants of the mill", and its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). A photo under the Creative Commons license, credited to Father Igor, illustrates this emblematic monument of the Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the New Aquitaine region.
