Origin and history

The old bridge of Juvigny-sur-Seulles, also known as the Gallo-Roman bridge, although mentioned only from the end of the 15th century, is a medieval structure allowing the crossing of the Seulles. Located at the border between Juvigny-sur-Seulles and Tilly-sur-Seulles in Calvados, it is characterized by five arches in the middle of the hanger and a light donkey back. Its exact origin remains uncertain, but its existence is attested as early as 1490, marking its historical importance in the region.

During the Ancien Régime, this bridge was a busy passage, leading to the installation of a hotel and a cabaret nearby to accommodate travellers. However, his condition deteriorated over time, and in 1850 a new bridge was built due to the danger of the old, considered too narrow. Despite this, the old bridge has not been destroyed and has been preserved until today.

The monument was listed as a historic monument on September 19, 2006, recognizing its heritage value. Today it is owned by the commune and remains an architectural testimony of exchanges and local life under the Old Regime. Its style, with triangular forks protecting the batteries, reflects medieval construction techniques adapted to the hydraulic constraints of the Alone.
