Origin and history
The old bridge over the Seille is a medieval building located in Baume-les-Messieurs, in the Jura department. Built in the 13th century, it is distinguished by its unique arched stone structure in the middle of the hanger, typical of the architecture of the era. Measuring 7 meters long and 3 meters wide, it has a profile in the donkey back, characteristic of the bridges of this period.
The bridge is located to the north of the village, crossed by the road of Gyp Bega, which leads to the cliff of the remote Baume-les-Messeurs. It was listed as historic monuments on November 17, 1929, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune and remains a witness of medieval engineering in this region.
This type of bridge played an essential role in local exchanges in the Middle Ages, facilitating the passage of people and goods through watercourses. In the rural context of Jura, stone bridges like this were often strategic points for villages, linking agricultural areas and dwellings. Their construction also reflected the skills of local artisans and the growing need for mobility in a predominantly agrarian society.
