Origin and history

The Vilhosc Priory Farm is a building located in the commune of Entrepierres, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, whose origins date back to the second half of the 10th century and the first half of the 11th century, bears witness to a medieval religious and agricultural occupation. The crypt, a central element of the site, was classified as historic monuments by decree of 12 July 1934, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The crypt of Vilhosc was studied in detail by Albert Chauvel, published in the Monumental Bulletin in 1931. This document, along with the references available on the Merimée and Territography bases, provides insight into its architecture and role in the local religious context. The site, although partially documented, remains a significant example of rural priory provençals of the year Mil, integrating both spiritual and economic functions.

The location of the farm, specified by GPS coordinates and address 5313 Le Prieuré, confirms its anchoring in the landscape of Entrepierres. The 1934 classification only concerns the crypt, suggesting that other parts of the building might have undergone transformations or disappearances over the centuries. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not mention any further protections or restorations, leaving shades on its post-medieval evolution.

In the wider historical context, the Xth and 11th centuries in Provence-Alpe-Côte d'Azur are marked by a recomposition of religious and seigneurial structures. Priories, such as Vilhosc, often played a role as a spiritual and economic centre for surrounding rural communities. Their settlement reflected the dynamics of settlement and land development, in a region then under both Carolingian and Mediterranean influence.

The lack of mention of the patrons or occupants of the priory in the sources limits the understanding of its social history. However, the classified crypt and bibliographical references indicate a lasting interest in this site, both archaeologically and historically. The internal data and Creative Commons licenses associated with photographs (such as Sébastien Thébault's) now facilitate its documentation and heritage valuation.
