Origin and history

The Creole villa in the Domaine de la Vallée, located on Badamiers Road in the Bois d'Olives district of Saint-Pierre, is a former colonial plantation on the island of La Réunion. This monument, built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, illustrates the typical architecture of the agricultural houses of the period, marked by the history of colonization and the sugar economy. Classified as a historic monument since October 2, 1989, it bears witness to the built heritage associated with farming in the tropical climate of Réunion.

The Domaine de la Vallée, with its Creole villa, is part of the cultural landscape of Saint-Pierre, a town in the south of La Réunion. This type of dwelling, often associated with sugar cane plantations, reflects the social and economic organization of the island in the 19th century, where the masters of the estates lived with a labour force largely derived from slavery and then engagism. The villa, with its architectural features adapted to the climate (varangues, wide roofs), also symbolizes the adaptation of European techniques to local constraints.

According to available sources, the Creole villa was built under the control of Anicet Orre, although little detailed information on its construction or initial use is available. The 1989 classification underscores its heritage importance, preserving a remarkable example of Réunion colonial habitat. Today, the site remains a material testimony of this pivotal period in the history of La Réunion, between abolition of slavery (1848) and development of the modern plantation economy.
