Origin and history
The Villa de la Cité des Bosquets is part of a set of four new neighborhoods designed by architect Georges Candilis in 1954 to house employees of the Marcoule nuclear plant. This project met an urgent need for housing related to industrial settlement in the region. The villa, although partially modified, preserves original elements such as its stone trim and its period floors, with the exception of the staircase whose rough concrete steps were covered.
The architecture of the villa is distinguished by functional and aesthetic details, like a concrete wall pierced with horizontal slots protecting the entrance. Inside, the floors and terrace, with slabs arranged in five pieces, remind the drawing of the stone walls. These choices reflect a desire to harmonize modernity and landscape integration, typical of Candilis's achievements for workers' cities.
Classified Historic Monument by order of 26 May 2014, the villa includes its terraces in protection. Today owned by a private company, it bears witness to the industrial and architectural history of the Occitanie region, marked by the installation of the Marcoule nuclear site. Its current state, although partially altered (disappeared wood tiles), still allows to appreciate its original design.
