Origin and history

Villa des Clérais, also known as Château du Cleray or Clairay, is a neo-classical building located in Vallet, in the Loire-Atlantique department. Built before 1840, it embodies the bourgeois residential architecture of the early 19th century, with its clean lines and harmonious proportions. The estate was originally acquired in 1824 by Charles Marie Richard, before his grandson, Charles-Marie Richard de La Vergne, erected the present villa.

The monument is closely linked to the Richard de La Vergne family, which made it its residence. According to the sources, the property was acquired by Léon-Richard de la Vergne in 1824, and then passed on to his son Charles-Marie, who sponsored the construction. The villa, whose architect remains anonymous, was classified as historical monuments by decree of 30 January 1997, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Today, the Villa des Clérais is distinguished by its family history and architectural style, typical of the aristocratic residences of the time. Although the information on its current use (visits, rental) is fragmentary, its official inscription makes it a preserved testimony of the 19th century Liguria heritage.
