Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman villa of Marcenay, located in Pannessières in the Jura, is an architectural vestige dating from the periods of the Upper Empire and the Lower Roman Empire, between the 1st and the 5th century. This site illustrates the Roman settlement in Gaul and the evolution of rural habitats during this time. Its architecture and spatial organization reflect Gallo-Roman lifestyles and construction techniques, typical of the large farms of the time.
The monument has been recognized as a Historical Monument and has been subject to official protection since its inscription by order of 8 July 1988. The protected elements specifically include Cadastral plots AN 109 to 112. The villa is now partly state owned and partly private, which can influence its accessibility and conservation. Although the practical information on visits is not detailed in the available sources, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a site of major heritage interest for the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
The location of the villa, although documented with an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note of 6/10), remains approximate according to the GPS coordinates available. It is located near the address "5228 A la Provence" in Pannessières, in the Jura department. This site is part of a regional context marked by a strong Gallo-Roman presence, as evidenced by other archaeological remains of the period in the vicinity. The villa of Marcenay thus offers valuable insight into the rural history and agricultural economy of the Roman Gaul in this part of the present Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
