Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman villa of the Tuillières, located in Perngey (Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), is an archaeological vestige typical of the Roman occupation in Gaul. This type of agricultural estate, called villa, was at the heart of the Gallo-Roman rural economy, combining farming, residential housing and sometimes spaces dedicated to crafts or commerce. The villas bear witness to the romanization of local elites and the integration of conquered territories into the Empire.

The site was officially recognized and protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments on 14 September 1989, covering the remains identified under the cadastral reference ZC 68. Although the available sources (in particular Monumentum) do not specify the exact extent of the excavations or structures discovered, this legal protection underlines its heritage importance. Approximate localization, noted as "passible" (level 5/10), suggests that further investigations could refine site knowledge.

In the Gallo-Roman era, Burgundy today was crossed by major trade routes and marked by a dense rural occupation. Villas such as Tuillières played a key role in grain, wine or livestock production, while serving as a residence for landowners, often Romanized local notables. Their decline, between the third and fifth centuries, coincides with the political and economic upheavals of the late Roman Empire in the West.
