Gallo-Roman villa: inscription by order of 5 February 1937
Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman villa of Rognes is an architectural vestige dating from Antiquity, located in the commune of Rognes, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. This monument, inscribed by ministerial decree in 1937, illustrates the Roman settlement in Provence and its integration into the local rural landscape. Its conservation status and location, noted as "satisfactory" (level 7/10), make it a site of interest in the study of Gallo-Roman habitats.
Gallo-Roman villas, such as Rognes, were generally agricultural estates operated by wealthy owners or veterans of the Roman army. These ensembles combined residential spaces, production areas (wine, cereal) and craft facilities. Their presence in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur reflects the economic importance of the region under the Roman Empire, especially for Mediterranean trade.
The Rognes site, although partially documented, has been protected under the Historic Monuments since 5 February 1937. This inscription specifically concerns the vestiges of the villa, without additional precision on the architectural elements preserved. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée database) indicate an administrative address in Rognes (Insee code 13082), but do not detail how to access or open to the public.
