Origin and history

The villa La Jetée, also known as the Bugeau Castle, was built in 1903 in Fouras, Charente-Maritime. Located opposite the Port Nord, its main entrance is at 3 boulevard de la Jetée. This building perfectly illustrates the seaside architectural style of the 1900s, with its two rectangular blocks and its two towers: a square tower on the sea façade, serving as a gazebo and sheltering the entrance porch, and a round tower in corbellation at the back, housing the stairwell. The ensemble is designed by the architect Cotton, marking a period of development of secondary residences on the Atlantic coast.

The villa La Jetée is classified as a historical monument by order of 2 February 2007. This protection covers not only the villa itself, but also the fence walls and the floor of the plots on which it is situated. This classification shows the heritage importance of this building, representative of a time when Fouras, like other seaside resorts, attracted a bourgeoisie in search of resorts. The villa's architecture, combining functionality and aesthetics, reflects this elite's aspirations for both practical and prestigious residences.
