Origin and history

Villa Palacios, located 12 rue des Lilas in Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire), is a house built between 1925 and 1950, representative of the Art-Deco style. It is distinguished by its modern concrete architecture, geometric shapes, roof terraces, and a semi-out-of-work rotunda rhythmized by columns. Ornamental details, such as crucifix friezes, ironwork with interlaced circle motifs and figurative bas-reliefs (wildheads and female figures), highlight this stylistic influence. The garden, organized around the rotunda, incorporates concrete arrangements (slippers, gardeners), while the fence wall takes the shape of the villa to enhance it from the street.

In 1931, the company J. Dutronc et fils created a subdivision in the Bel-Air district of Mâcon, on land northwest of the historic centre. Philippe Palacios, a building contractor, acquired a lot in 1933 and entrusted its construction to the Mâconese architects Camille Fournier and Raoul Leguet. They design an ambitious villa, combining structural modernity (beton, stilts) and decorative Art-Deco elegance. The consistency between the villa, its garden and its fenced wall reflects a global approach to the architectural project.

Villa Palacios, including its garden and its fence walls, is listed as historical monuments by order of 28 May 2024. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its innovative architecture and for its landscape integration. The site, located on parcel 93 of the AD section of the Macon cadastre, illustrates the evolution of lifestyles and constructive techniques in the inter-war period.
