Origin and history

The Vincent van Gogh Arles Foundation is a non-profit institution and a contemporary art museum located in Arles, France. It is dedicated to the work and heritage of Vincent van Gogh, with the mission of promoting cultural and artistic activities in connection with the period that the painter spent in this city. Van Gogh had expressed the desire to establish an international centre for artistic creation and exchange, an ambition that the foundation continues today.

In 1983, Yolande Clergue, curator and wife of photographer Lucien Clergue, founded the Association for the Creation of the Van Gogh Foundation, marking the beginning of the project. Two years later, in 1985, she launched a collection of works by contemporary artists in tribute to Van Gogh, including an enthusiastic contribution by Francis Bacon, who created a painting specially for the foundation. More than 90 artists participate in this collective tribute.

The project gained new momentum in 2008 thanks to Luc Hoffmann, who established a permanent framework for the Foundation's activities. It was officially created in 2010 under the name Vincent van Gogh Arles Foundation and settled in the Hôtel Léautaud de Donines. It now houses a contemporary art collection and organizes exhibitions and events related to Van Gogh's legacy. The board of directors includes figures such as Maja Hoffmann, President, and Yvon Lambert, Vice-President, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Interior and Culture, and the City of Arles.
