Roman way along the old road of Autun on the south side (line): classification by decree of 27 June 1935

Origin and history

The Roman Way of Mercuryy is an ancient vestige located on the territory of the municipality of Mercurey, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This section, dated from the third century, illustrates the importance of Roman infrastructures in the territorial organization of Gaul. It was identified as a segment of the route probably linking Autun, former Augustodunum, the educational and religious capital of the Eduans under the Roman Empire.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 27 June 1935, this route is one of the protected elements of the local heritage. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that it was along the old road of Autun on its southern side. Today, the site is owned by the municipality of Mercurey, although its accessibility and conservation status are not detailed in the documents consulted.

The 1935 classification underscores the archaeological and historical value of this section, demonstrating Roman construction techniques and their sustainability. Approximate GPS coordinates place the site near the said place 4 Les Cèdres, but the accuracy of this location is considered poor (level 5/10). No information is available on any tourist developments or recent excavations.
