Origin and history

The Porte-Dorée Palace, built by Albert Laprade for the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, initially housed the Colonies Museum, celebrating the diversity of the French Empire. Its monumental bas-relief by Alfred Janniot and its interior decorations (paintings, ironwork by Edgar Brandt or Jean Prouvé) made it an architectural symbol of colonial propaganda. The tropical aquarium, a vestige of this time, bears witness to its first vocation: to show the natural and cultural riches of the overseas territories.

Transformed into the African and Oceanian Arts Museum (1960-2003), the site loses its colonial function in favour of an artistic approach. The creation of the Quai Branly museum in 2006 led to the transfer of its collections, leaving the palace without any clear assignment. In 2004, Jean-Pierre Raffarin established the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, a project carried out since 1992 by historians such as Gérard Noiriel. Inaugurated in 2007, the museum explores migratory routes through permanent exhibitions (benchmarks), participatory archives and contemporary works.

The controversial project (dismissal of eight historians in 2007 from the Ministry of National Identity) is gradually becoming a major cultural player. With 150,000 visitors in 2015, he relies on multidisciplinary programming (cinema, conferences) and a media library to raise awareness of integration issues. The architect Patrick Bouchain has preserved the integrity of the classified building (facades, Art Deco lounges), while modernising the spaces to accommodate a variety of audiences, including 50% schools.

The permanent exhibition, structured in themes (Terre d'accueil, Au travail), crossing historical objects (trailer of mason, cook jacket) and artistic creations (Barthélémy Toguo, Zineb Sedira), aims to deconstruct prejudices. The donation gallery, where each visitor can contribute, illustrates this participatory approach. Despite initial criticisms (budget, attendance), the museum, officially inaugurated in 2014 by François Hollande, asserts itself as a place of memory and debate, complemented by an aquarium still in operation.

The palace, a masterpiece of colonial Art Deco, now embodies a symbolic reappropriation: from a propaganda tool to a space for recognizing migratory contributions. Controversies, as posted on Louis XIV in 2023, reveal the persistent tensions around national narratives. With a budget of 7 million euros and 20 million invested in its renovation, the public institution (since 2012) reconciles heritage preservation and museum innovation, while managing the complex legacy of its architecture.
