Géraldine Mallet - Author and historian Studyed the Romanesque churches of Roussillon.

Origin and history

The ancient church of Saint Paul in Calce is a Roman Catholic monument. Located in the town of Calce, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, it bears witness to the medieval Christian architecture of the Occitanie region. Its existence is attested by local sources, but the details of its construction and evolution remain little documented in the accessible archives.

Romanesque churches, like Calce, played a central role in the life of rural communities in the Middle Ages. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. In the Roussillon, these buildings were often constructed of local stone, incorporating defensive or symbolic elements related to the Christian faith.
