Origin and history
The priory of Ris, affiliated with the Clunisian order, was founded in 952. Its church, built between the end of the tenth and twelfth centuries, illustrates the first medieval construction campaigns. The gate was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, while the enclosure was rebuilt after 1401, reflecting architectural adaptations of the Gothic era.
Between 1767 and 1790, the residential building was completely rebuilt, reflecting the residential needs of the Ancien Régime. At the Revolution, the priory was sold as a national good and transformed into private dwellings, with the exception of the church, which became parish. The bell tower, destroyed, was rebuilt between 1825 and 1827, and work to consolidate the walls and vaults took place in 1881.
The 14th century tower, partially preserved, houses a 17th century painted decoration attesting to its religious vocation. This decoration was completed in the 18th century by a fireplace with Rocaille motifs, on which a cartoon character was painted around 1820. These elements illustrate the artistic and functional evolution of the site throughout the centuries.
Today, the tower, its murals, woodwork and fireplaces on the first and second floors have been protected since 1990. The priory, located in Place de la Mairie in Ris (Puy-de-Dôme), remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
