Origin and history
Wangen Hotel is an emblematic monument of Saverne, in the Lower Rhine, whose origins date back to the 16th century. The main body, dated 1569, has a stair turret that was originally hors-oeuvre and unidentified weapons on the first floor door. These elements suggest a primitive construction, perhaps preceded by older remains in the cellars. The building was enhanced in the first half of the seventeenth century for Christian de Wangen, marking a major architectural transformation.
Around 1653, the building was enriched with an adjacent fortification tower and a wing in return, reflecting the defensive and residential needs of the time. A third building, erected in the 18th century, bears the marks of a tasker, while most of the old bays were modified between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The hotel changed its vocation over the centuries: transformed into a cure under the management of the chapter Notre-Dame, it became communal property in 1794, successively housing the town hall and, since 1804, the Catholic presbytery.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of October 16, 1930, Wangen Hotel retains traces of medieval fortifications. Its address, 24 rue des Murs, and its status as communal property make it a major architectural and historical testimony of the region. The successive modifications, from windows to structural additions, illustrate its adaptation to usages and times, while preserving original elements such as the door dated 1569.
