Origin and history

The Lavoir de Purgerot is a monument located in the village of the same name, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This type of construction, often associated with the daily life of rural communities, was mainly used for laundry. Washrooms were places of encounter and exchange for the inhabitants, playing a social role as important as practical.

In areas such as Burgundy-Franche-Comté, washbasins were generally built near a source or stream to facilitate access to water. They bear witness to a time when domestic chores were collective and these public spaces structured village life. Their architecture, often simple but functional, reflects the local needs and know-how of the time.
